It's been over 7 years since the last mainline, numbered console installment in the beloved Metal Gear Solid series, but the release of The Phantom Pain is finally upon us. With launch day upon us, reviews have been flooding in and the word from around the industry is unanimously positive.
It's been roughly 7 years since Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots blew our minds in 2008, and 5 years since Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker reshaped people's expectations for Sony's struggling PlayStation Portable system. Last year's Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes acted as a paid demo of sorts that offered a tantalizing glimpse of what fans could expect from the series' future, but there is no denying that the wait for a real, impactful console Metal Gear has been achingly long and that the AAA games industry has been all the poorer for it.
Originally I planned the next installment of my “First Times” series to be on the Mass Effect trilogy and I would write it as I played through each game. Unfortunately I only finished the first game before other matters took precedent. But fret not fellow readers, I have come back with another series that I know next to nothing about which makes it the prime candidate for a first times: Metal Gear Solid. That’s right, Metal Gear.
Hideo Kojima has finally revealed the release date for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, the latest entry in the nearly three-decade old saga. Players will get their first taste of Kojima's unique brand of open-world stealth on September 1st.
For those keeping track: it's been nearly 7 years since the release of the last mainline console entry, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and going on 5 since the impressive handheld Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Last year saw the launch of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, which acted as something of a tech demo for the Fox Engine and a testbed for the series' new gameplay systems. This game has been a long time coming, and if we end up seeing this, Persona 5, and Final Fantasy XV (fingers crossed) all in the same year 2015 could be one for the record books.
