New art test footage shows a confident and imaginative sequel to a true cult classic.
When Psychonauts 2 was announced for crowdfunding through Fig, and with a team assembled from Double Fine and The Molasses Flood studio members no less, it felt like a fever dream. Today the project has never felt more real, as Tim Schafer and co. have revealed the game's publisher alongside gorgeous new test footage.
Starbreeze Studios, the developers of games like The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, and Payday 2, are handling publishing duties. Their strong development background should act as a wonderful counterbalance to the creative but often mercurial Schafer, helping to keep the project on-goal throughout its development.
The test footage is even more exciting, showing series' protagonist Raz running through a nostalgic forested environment located just outside of Psychonauts Headquarters. It sounds like the fabled HQ and its surrounding environs will act as a new hub, similar to the summer camp from the original game. Concept art promises several distinct outdoor locations as well as a '60s spy movie aesthetic for its interior sections.
Today's Fig Update also has a host of new info about the game's use of Unreal Engine 4, a new video of a research trip that the team went on, and new details on Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, the series' VR debut.
