When Science Fiction stops being fiction.
Anime and Video Games have always enjoyed a tight relationship, with each medium influencing the other in an unending dance of mutual inspiration. It seems obvious in hindsight, then, that VR technology could be the tool to link the two mediums together like never before. Production IG has always been on the cutting edge of animation technology and their current project, Ghost In The Shell: Virtual Reality Diver, looks to be a powerful statement of the potential that the more interactive and immersive nature of VR can bring to their flagship animated franchise.
Although still limited to Japan, Production IG has already distributed their first VR experiences throughout internet cafes and is working on ultimately getting the film on PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and Gear VR.
Creative director Nobumichi Asai comments on how technology in our modern times is getting closer and closer to the "cyberpunk" world of the legendary manga and anime series by the day, citing "... the globalization of internet and smartphones, the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, the production of 3D-printed prosthetics, the evolutions of researches on synthetical skin, kidneys and DNA..." as prime examples.
