Ariana Grande is going to be a character in Square Enix's mobile hit Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius.
Pop sensation and all around dangerous woman Ariana Grande is coming to Square Enix's mobile Final Fantasy as a playable character. This is surprising news, but also surprisingly logical once you know that Ariana is hugely popular in Japan. Considering that Final Fantasy XV features brand deals with Cup Noodles, Coleman, and American Express, merging real world advertising with fantastic worlds seems to be the way Square Enix will operate going forward.
It's also important to remember that Square Enix has a long history of using pop stars to promote the Final Fantasy brand worldwide. Most recently Final Fantasy XV featured several songs from Florence + the Machine, including a beautiful cover of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" that is used a few times throughout the story to incredible effect.
Faye Wong performed the "Eyes On Me" theme song for Final Fantasy VIII, Rikki did "Suteki da ne" for Final Fantasy X, and Leona Lewis provided "My Hands" for Final Fantasy XIII. There are more I didn't cover, and famously Utada Hikaru does all the theme songs for Square Enix and Disney's Kingdom Hearts franchise.
Square Enix has even been willing to make its prolific connections a vital part of the game experience. Legendary J-Pop star and actor Gackt plays Genesis, a pivotal figure in the Final Fantasy VII extended universe who features heavily in the excellent portable prequel Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.
We'll have more information on this unexpected collaboration as it comes!
